History

History is an enjoyable and interesting subject as it involves the study of human beings and their societies. There is nothing in the present that cannot be better understood in the light of its historical context and origins. Studying the past enhances an awareness of the world around us and should increase tolerance and understanding of other communities and countries.

The history department adopts a variety of teaching and learning approaches including formal whole class teaching, group work, pair work and individual tasks, drama, role play, debating, displays and project work. Teachers make use of various media – written, aural, oral, IT, fieldwork and artefacts; and detective work activities are organised that require opinions, decisions and judgements, opportunities to be adventurous and also creative and imaginative enquiry.

Year 9 pupils study a range of topics including World War 1, World War 2 and Twentieth Century conflicts. History is an optional subject at GCSE and the AQA syllabus is followed. This programme incorporates a Development Study on Medicine Through Time and a Depth Enquiry involving Germany 1919-45.

Trips are run at regular intervals to enhance the curriculum both in Year 9 and at GCSE. Year 11 make an annual visit to the theatre as part of their revision programme.

A number of Shapwick students have gone onto study History at A Level and University.
