Mathematics

The overall aim is to develop in pupils a rounded perspective of mathematics which will reflect the requirements of the National Curriculum and prepare them for GCSE and adult life.

For some, mathematics can be a daunting subject. It is important that teachers build on their strengths, provide structure and strategies to tackle problems and regularly re-visit topics to reinforce skills and knowledge.

In Year 9 students have the opportunity to cover a wide range of topics – some of which may be familiar but other may be new. At the same time we will practise their number skills. When the pupils are ready, they will be introduced to GCSE level work.

Currently we use the AQA Modular course 4360 but this may have to change with proposed removal of modular courses.

Unit 1 - Statistics and Number Written exam (calculator) 1 hour 54 marks 26.7% Foundation and Higher tiers.

Unit 2 - Number and Algebra Written exam (no calculator) 1 hour 15 minutes 66 marks 33.3% Foundation and Higher tiers.

Unit 3 - Geometry and Algebra Written exam (calculator) 1 hour 30 minutes 80 marks 40% Foundation and Higher tiers.  There may be exams in November, March and June depending on progress and previous results.  See http://www.aqa.org.uk/resource-zone/maths/gcse-maths.php for example papers and answers.

All maths classrooms have interactive whiteboard and all pupils have access to online resources including mymaths.co.uk and www.supermathsworld.com. Students make significant progress at the school and this is reflected in their success rate with all pupils achieving at GCSE, surpassing national averages.
