The Therapy Team at Shapwick School, which specialises in supporting children with dyslexia, has worked in partnership with the University College Plymouth St Mark and St John (MARJON) since 2006, and its links with the University are going from strength to strength.
Sophie Putt and Jeni Halls, who are both final year students from the BSc (Hons) Speech & Language Therapy course recently completed a seven-week placement working with the school’s on-site Therapy Team.
The two students, who both live in Plymouth, started the placement after the Easter vacation and after working closely with the experienced Therapy team, have enjoyed running sessions with pupils independently. They have also visited Shapwick Prep to see how dyslexia affects the younger pupils and have observed the school’s Occupational Therapy team with both age ranges, providing a multi-disciplinary point of view.
Kath Cooper, Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist and Cynthia Pollard, Principal Specialist Speech & Language Therapist also recently gave a talk to second year teacher training students doing the Special Education module of their B.Ed course to offer an in-sight into how therapy is an integral part of the school. The experienced therapists outlined what each therapy concerns and how is delivered at Shapwick to meet the pupils’ needs. Their talk was so well received that they have been invited back next year.
Both Speech & Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy play a significant part in the education of many of the pupils at the school as they seek to overcome the challenges that dyslexia and its attendant problems present to them. It is provided to those who need it within the context of their educational timetable which enables all staff to be aware of the impact of those particular difficulties and the ways in which teachers can assist the pupils with them, together with the provision of direct therapy on a weekly basis.
