Mathematics

Shapwick Prep’s numeracy strategy is based on a multi-sensory approach using auditory, visual and kinaesthetic methods to deliver the curriculum to groups of 5-8 pupils for 1 hour and 10 minutes each morning (when pupils are at their most receptive).

Specific diagnostic testing is carried out on entry and subsequently every year the school also tests on entry for visual perceptual difficulties and learning personality. These tests are then used to inform teaching and, by repeating at the end of each year, can highlight any continuing areas of weakness as well as clearly showing where successful teaching has taken place.

The greatest successes usually lie in the first year of entry but, due to the over-learning nature of the syllabus, the longer the pupil is at the school the greater the benefits.

This past academic year (September 2008 – July 2009) the average gain for new pupils was 33 months with the highest gain being 57 months for a Year 7 pupil.

The primary aim of Shapwick Prep’s Maths Department is to create success where previously there has been failure and confusion. The teachers hope they can also help the children realise that Maths can be fun!
