Games

During the year all pupils take part in a variety of Games activities to develop essential life qualities such as team spirit, loyalty and self-respect. A high emphasis is also placed on keeping physically fit and healthy. All activities are therefore designed to ensure optimum fitness levels are achieved, and as a result, individuals can reach their own skill potential.

Sports

A combination of team sports are carefully chosen each year based on pupil numbers, gender and the ages of those attending the Prep School. The sports often include Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Football Cricket and Rounders, and are chosen so to maximise both team and individual success and enjoyment. A whole afternoon each week is dedicated to sports coaching and fixtures. Team training is also offered as an additional activity during the week.

Responsibilities

Captains and Vice Captains are selected for each sport, providing development opportunities in leadership and communication skills. Those selected are often consulted on team selection and are involved in managing the team during fixtures against other schools.

Fixtures

Prep School Teams play regularly against a variety of Independent and State Schools from around the South West of England. It’s not only the most talented sportsmen and women who get to play for their school. At least once every term a whole school multi-fixture is organized with another school, where every pupil experiences a competitive game against equally able opposition.

For further details of forthcoming fixture dates please visit the School Calendar.

Competitions

In March this year our Football Team entered the National Dyslexic Football Tournament in Surrey for the first time, and managed to get to the final. We were beaten in the final by the host school, but what a fantastic achievement and a really enjoyable day!

For the past four years Shapwick Prep has hosted a girls football tournament. Schools who attend regularly are Millfield, Chilton Cantelo and St Michaels.

Cross-country has continued to be a very popular choice of activity for the pupils. During 2009-10 over half the school opted for Cross-Country as their Friday afternoon activity. Every year a number of boys and girls teams are entered in the Edgarly cross-country relays at Millfield Prep School. This is a huge event with hundreds of the best 1500m runners in the country competing. It’s a fantastic experience for the pupils involved, and our team and individual positionshave been improving year on year!
