A Typical Day

The staff at Shapwick Senior strive to make learning fun and interesting everyday. Shapwick Senior operates formal lessons five and a half days per week, and boarders enjoy activities/visits on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. The school day is divided into ten half-an-hour sessions.

The school day starts at 9.00am with assembly. Tutor groups meet every Monday and Friday mornings.

Formal lessons start at 9.15am. Lessons are arranged as double period sessions wherever possible to minimise disruption caused from pupils moving from one part of the school campus to another.

There is a morning break at 11.25am until 11.45am during which pupils enjoy a drink and fruit.

A one hour lunch break starts at 12.24pm, following by formal lessons until 3.55pm.

At 3.55pm pupils have a snack break during which time they are free to read emails, private study or enjoy some fresh air and play games/sport. At 4.25pm all pupils are allocated an activity or do prep (i.e. homework) for the final hour of the day.

Year 10 and 11 pupils have two preps each week whilst year 9 have one prep per week. Boarders have a short second prep in their boarding house to complete any work or for quiet reading, watching the national news. It is expected that day pupils will do likewise, but at home.

Every pupil, if not involved in that afternoon’s prep session, will be engaged in an activity, thus, year 9 have to choose four activities whilst year 10 and 11 have to choose three activities.

At 5.30pm day pupils are free to leave the campus and boarders prepare for supper which starts at 6pm in the school Dining Room.
