Careers

Shapwick pupils are encouraged to think about their future from Year 9 onwards through a programme of tutorials and special careers events. Individual help with career choice is always available within the school.

All Year 9 pupils visit the Mall at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol for a special insight into the range of career opportunities offered in the retail environment. Some stores allow pupils to have a look behind the scenes, which the children find particularly interesting. After this visit the pupils work in groups and prepare presentations for the rest of the year group and staff from the Mall.

At the end of Year 10 pupils enjoy Work Week, which aims to provide a more diverse insight into the world of work than traditional work experience placements. The programme includes a whole year visit to Agusta Westland in Yeovil, and visits in small groups to a range of local organisations. Organisations that have welcomed Shapwick pupils in the past include Moto Services, Wincanton Distribution, Robert Wiseman dairies and local quarries.

As part of Work Week pupils also participate in numerous activities/games to develop their skill base, e.g. negotiation, teamworking and communication. The week ends with group presentations regarding the visits and a radio and TV advert produced for the organisation visited.

Year 11 pupils are invited to mock interviews during the autumn term. Shapwick invites local business/HR managers to the school to make the process as authentic as possible.
