Drama

Shapwick is proud of its successful track record in this subject. Several Shapwick students have gone on to specialise in Drama or Performing Arts at sixth form college and then onto University.

Students who follow the drama course often find their studies help them in many other ways. All students are given the chance to experience success and many find speaking in public, or even interviews, are much easier. Their self esteem increases greatly. Also because the student is eager to take part successfully, they do not find reading in the group such a chore and are eager to have a go, realising that it doesn’t matter if they can’t manage a word first time. This is a very useful spin off for other subjects.

The GCSE course includes the study of set scripts, many of which are quite demanding, but experience shows that pupils usually thoroughly enjoy these studies and do well in the written exam. The course covers all aspects of the theatre, and students can find or create costumes and design and construct scenery. They also learn about stage make up and the use of masks. They enjoy the opportunity to try different acting styles and of course, they visit the theatre regularly to see professional and amateur productions.

The drama department has a large wardrobe collection, stage lighting, PA equipment, a portable stage, and Shapwick’s Hayloft converts to a very attractive theatre.
