Science

Science is taught over three double lessons a week at Shapwick. In Year 9 students have one double lesson each of biology, chemistry and physics. In Years 10 and 11 students have three double lessons of one science for a term in order to prepare for modular exams, then they rotate to a different science for the next term. Students earn a GCSE in Core Science in Year 10, and a separate GCSE in Additional Science in Year 11.

In Year 9 science, there is an emphasis on designing proper experiments, graphing results accurately, and explaining the content through visually creative assignments.

In Years 10 and 11 students build on their practical skills in order to master the content required for their exams. Students are assessed by Edexcel; 30% of their mark is comprised of analysis of experimental work done in lessons, 60% through multiple choice or structured question modules, and 10% through practical skills. In the 2008-9 academic year, 68% of Year 10 students and 73% of Year 11 students earned A*-C grades.

To support the curriculum, students take part in various activities throughout the year. Visiting lecturers keep students up to date in current technology; the students grow and compost some of the food that is served in the kitchen; they take advantage of topical science exhibitions and various museums; they assist in local conservation efforts; they take opportunities to go birdwatching, gardening and fishing, and to experience first-hand physics at an amusement park.

Shapwick’s dyslexic students do not find science more difficult than students in mainstream schools; any challenges in literacy and numeracy are usually overcome by using lots of pictures and models to describe scientific processes, and by giving students lots of opportunities to practice their scientific skills through small, relaxed classes.
