Art Day 2009

Shapwick School’s Art Day, which is always held on the final Wednesday of each academic year, is one of the highlights of the school year.

Over twelve professional artists participated in the tenth event on 8th July 2009, including Eric Petrie demonstrating caricature drawing, stamp designer Nick Shewring, local photographer David Titchener, well-known Somerset water colour artist Michael Cooper and sculptor Clive Hamond Lovatt.

The artists, designers, and performers set up their studios in and around the school’s beautiful campus, and were visited by groups of pupils and guests from the local village throughout the day. Pupils enjoy talking to the demonstrators and seeing, firsthand, what is involved in their every day work. Special workshops are organised so pupils could ‘have a go’ at new skills, e.g. weaving, and also view a mini rally of interesting vehicles and engines.

Two concerts were held in 2009 – one at lunch time by celloist, Kate Riaz and Pete Stearn on guitar. The event finished on a high with an Evening Concert which included performances by Shapwick pupils and The Amazing Mr. Smith, one of the country’s best loved ‘alternative musical comedians’.
