Mrs C Pollard, Dip CST, Dip IPA
- Role:
- Principal Specialist Speech and Language Therapist
- Department:
- Therapy
- Email:
- cynthia.pollard@shapwickschool.com
Cynthia qualified as a speech and language therapist in the early 1970s. During Cynthia’s first two posts, working as a Speech and Language Therapist for Somerset and Salop County Councils, she gained much general experience with children and young people working in a wide variety of settings – health centres, schools for educationally subnormal children (both moderate and severe), a residential school for ESN girls with additional behaviour problems, a hospital children’s assessment centre, an adult training centre for learning disabled people. She was involved in the setting up and running of a number of intensive speech and language therapy courses, ranging from some for pre-school children to others for older pupils with stammers.
Cynthia then worked as a Speech and Language Therapist at Somerset Health Authority where she was tasked with improving the service offered. This role also allowed her to pursue her interest in special education as she worked at a special school for severely educationally disabled children and two opportunity playgroups.
Cynthia then changed direction, due to the demands of a young family, and worked as a warden in sheltered housing for the elderly.
In 1988 Cynthia was looking for suitable educational provision for her second son, who was significantly affected by dyslexia, and came across Shapwick School. At the time there was a vacancy for a Speech and Language Therapist which Cynthia secured.
Her role involved developing the therapy service from scratch, identifying the needs and how they could best be met, supporting staff by training and regular liaison, maintaining links with the families of all pupils (a number of whom live abroad). Service policy has continually evolved. In October 2000, and again in June 2004, the service achieved the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists’ Accreditation ‘Signed Up to Quality’, the service being only the second one in the UK to gain this and the only service to do so twice.
Cynthia’s post has enabled her to develop her knowledge of specific learning difficulties within a specialist setting, adapting and using many of the principles learned elsewhere and developing methods of approach to suit the children. The department has grown to include three Occupational Therapists and four other Speech and Language Therapists.
Cynthia travelled to South Africa in 2006 as part of a professional delegation with THRASS UK to visit and work in rural schools in the Mpumalanga province, and to visit schools in the Johannesburg area looking at the development of language and literacy skills there.
