1st XL Football Review

Having avoided the temptation to go into the transfer market during the close season, we turned our attention to getting our training routines correct to prepare for the new season.

Our first game of the season soon arrived with the students at the peak of fitness and looking to showcase their finely honed skills.  The game did not disappoint with a home crowd behind us and local rivals Mark College in opposition, the players rose to the occasion and showed an excellent team and work ethic to end up winning 5 - 2.

As we will all remember during the mid-season most of the pitches were under water but unfortunately our next match saw us playing on an artificial pitch.  A difficult surface for us to get to grips with early on but in the second half particularly we took the game to Kings and scored some super goals to come away 5 - 2 winners.

The first away game saw us travel for the return leg at Mark College and despite an early good start the jet-lag caught up with us and we succumbed to a more robust side.

Another away game at Stover in Devon saw us battling with arctic-like conditions where thermals, undershorts and a woolly hat were the minimum requirements, just for the crowd.  It was a good game played in an excellent spirit and although we lost, costly mistakes were the only difference between the two sides.

A return to the home venue for our next game was going to be a defining moment for the season.  The pre-match focus was getting back to playing simple football and working for each other as a team.  The result spoke for itself, with the team playing some good football, ending up eventually 4 - 1 winners.  Both teams played the game in an excellent spirit allowing the football to flow.

A most satisfactory season is summed up with the players developing a greater team ethic and the understanding that their strength lies with the ability to work as a team rather than individuals with skills.  During the season we have been able to rotate all squad members ensuring debuts have been given to students joining the squad.

Sadly we missed out on a champions League place and we will not be entertaining Barcelona or Real Madrid next year!
