Impressive Cross Country performances
At the end of January Shapwick pupils from across the school donned their trainers and track suits to compete in the ISA South West Cross Country Championships in the picturesque Haldon Forest near Exeter.
The event was well attended with just over400 runners competing over distances of 1.25 miles (for year 4) up to 4 miles for the U20 (years 11,12,13) age groups.
All the Shapwick runners performed admirably with many pupils setting personal best times, displaying determination and working hard. Particular highlights included Grace Neal in year 11 winning the U20 girls race and helping Marine Brannan, Celine de Brisis, ZoeRay-Coquais and Bella Skyrme-Jones to take the U20 girls team title. Charlie Merson (year 10) earned a 3rd place in his race and Josh Marsh finished a respectable 8th out of 46 runners in the U20 boy’s category, all of which have now qualified for the National Finals.
Other notable performances included determined runs from Tabitha Sellick, Maisy Hiscox, Frankie Bull, Harry Turnell, Matt Bishop, Nini Spencer, Alex Watson and our youngest runner Oliver William-Powlett.
All the runners did Shapwick School proud and it was excellent to see every single one of our pupils cheering and encouraging the other Shapwick runners from the side lines as they went flying past them down the finishing straight.
