Art and Design

Art and Design is always a popular subject at Shapwick. Students enjoy excellent facilities with a beautifully light art studio, where everyone has the opportunity to work at the correct angle with plenty of space to lay out work and materials.

The studio has a finishing and presentation area where all can learn to mount their work for display, and downstairs, there is a fully equipped dark room for the processing of silver print photography.

The main aim of the department is to ensure that every student has the chance to experience the delights of success, and the opportunity to develop skills and understanding at their own pace.

The Shapwick Art department has, over the years, enjoyed an excellent success rate at GCSE, with many students going on to study A levels and BTEC qualification at sixth form college. Many have gone on to study Art and Design subjects at Art School and University and we are very proud of our excellent record of success.

Art and Design/ Fine Art GCSE

Exam Board: OCR
Syllabus: A120/01 – A127/01

Art and Design is always a popular subject at Shapwick. We enjoy excellent facilities with a beautifully light art studio. The students have access to a wide range of books and wireless Internet connectivity.

The main aim of the department is to ensure that every student has the chance to experience the delights of success, and the opportunity to develop skills and understanding at their own pace.

In Year 10 students embark on the OCR GCSE syllabus. They start with an extensive research project to be completed during the summer holidays, in order that we have plenty of reference material to carry us through the first term. The theme of this project will be decided by me e.g. if the subject was ‘Reflections and Distortions’ then the students would be expected to collect as much information as possible related to this theme including drawings, photos, artists reproductions and anything else relevant both in the natural and man made environment.

Our students follow a Fine Art course this includes painting, sculpture and printmaking – they can combine any of these specialism’s if they wish to. By the end of Year 10, most of our pupils will have found a preference on which to concentrate and much of Year 11 sees personal choices being made as to what materials or techniques are chosen. Those who like to do it all can continue along this path.

The Shapwick Art Department has, over the years, enjoyed an excellent success rate at GCSE, AS and A Level, with many students going on to study A Levels and BTEC examinations at 6th Form College. Many have also gone on from here to study Art and Design subjects at Art School and University and we are proud of our excellent record of success.

Work in the Art Department is by no means a soft option. The study of Art encompasses everything; even a little written work! However, it is tremendous fun and everyone who really wants to try is welcome.
