Relationships between students and teachers are at the heart of unlocking our young peoples’ potential. Our deep understanding of students’ needs and abilities is essential for delivering the personalised learning that enthuses and inspires.

Students at Shapwick enjoy being in the classroom because they are able to access the curriculum in the way that it is presented to them.

Teaching is vibrant and stimulating. Students are challenged yet they are set achievable tasks so success is possible with determination and focus Learning opportunities widen at Shapwick, and teachers support students in taking advantage of these and making progress. Suddenly there is a chink of light for young people who have previously found it overwhelming.

Learning by doing is our watchword.

We focus on visual, kinaesthetic and auditory learning whereby students take an active part in their subjects. Our curriculum is brought to life by visiting experts, trips out and a hands on, modelled approach in the classroom. There is a focus on individual positive progress.

Our students need explicit explanations, in lots of different ways, to achieve secure understanding. They need recapping, embedding and application of what is taught. We aspire to move students on not only in terms of subject attainment but in terms of the skills that they gain. Our multi-sensory and holistic approach involves teachers, therapists, support staff and houseparents. We plan for personalised learning and strategies adopted to effect this include modelling, memory games, practical work, creation of memory hooks, peer work and much sharing of good practice within the staff team. Our students become knowledgeable, independent and proactive learners who know that they have potential and know how to achieve it.

Progress and Achieve

Our school values include commitment, achievement, self esteem and independence. These are at the heart of successful learning and are the key to a child achieving his or her potential. Shapwick provides an environment which nurtures self worth and fosters confidence and aspiration.

Most of our students achieve their potential at Key Stage 4. Post 16, most students remain at Shapwick and continue to meet or exceed national expectations in terms of progress - our students end up on apprenticeships, at colleges on one or two FE courses and / or at university.

Wherever our young people are destined, they leave rounded, articulate, empathetic and equipped to face the world of work.
